What Can Model Engineers Make?

Model engineering offers extensive opportunities to create miniature replicas of cars, buildings, and objects. Do you need a small version of the car? Engineers will be able to create an exact copy of it. Need to make a smaller version of the new district? Again, the engineers will be able to do this for you.

Model engineering is most prominent in industrialized countries, whose engineering heritage dates back to the days of steam power. It means that engineers from the US, UK and North-West European countries can create any product you want.

Nowadays, the latest technologies used for model engineering, such as computer-aided design, numerical control, laser cutting, and 3D printing, are becoming part of people’s hobby. Practitioners acquire skills and become familiar with these techniques in the process. Young people who are familiar with new technologies are discovering the potential of traditional machining, reviving and modernizing proven technologies.

To understand the options for model engineering, just look at the child’s toys-cars, trains, planes, and other things. All of them are smaller copies of full-size machines, and often small versions work almost as well as large ones. Model engineering is the construction of proportionally scaled miniature working models of full-size functioning machines and equipment.

The Aim of Model Engineering Before and Now

Model engineering, as a rule, is pure entertainment. The purpose of creating mechanical models is now very different from the period of the industrial revolution that started in the late 18th century up to the late 20th century, when models were widely produced as aids to technical education, either as student projects or as a classroom or public institutional exhibits.

Previously, they were produced as props to support a patent, to visualize certain products, or for a manufacturer’s trade advertisement. Many museums in industrially prosperous countries have original collections of mechanical models created in the early days of the Industrial revolution.

Model engineering is still popular today, despite major social changes in this area. The main changes include the abandonment of steam, which is still the preferred topic for model engineers in rail transport and industry; the production of models with less functionality, and the widespread deindustrialization of Western countries, which has reduced the production of model engineering. These changes, along with the age of many engineers and a decline in the number of new apprentices, have sparked a long-running debate about whether model engineering will disappear altogether.

Model Engineering Clubs and Societies

Model engineers often come together to form model engineering clubs and societies. The first of these was the Society of Model Engineers and Experimentalists, based in London, United Kingdom, in 1898, similar to the yacht clubs are popular at the time. By 1948, more than a hundred local clubs and societies had been formed. Model engineering clubs now number in the hundreds. These clubs are a form of social organizations, which is a sign of healthy community cohesion.

The focus for the majority of the clubs is on operating a club track or miniature railway for live miniature steam locomotive models. Modelers’ clubs and societies often serve not only the locomotives but also the interests of modellers. To this end, model engineer clubs and societies often join national bodies that can lobby the government to retain the historic privilege of self-regulating their safety standards.

It’s worth saying that model design-based livelihoods include suppliers who provide engineers with equipment, small manufacturing services that produce castings, make miniature steam boilers and complete hot steam parts, or even entire working models, commercial publishers who design models. Of course, very few professional model engineers make one-off models commissioned by private or institutional collectors. However, most model engineers are amateur designers who rely on other income.

The Most Famous Model Engineers

Many of the most famous names in model engineering are known in engineering and amateur engineering circles. For example, Henry Greenlee became the first famous model engineer, the founder of Model Railways and locomotives in 1902, and the author of model engineering and related books. Greenly produced several designs for models of locomotives running on alcohol, except that they could not carry passengers. The most famous model is probably the little-known Lillian “Curly” Lawrence.

Edgar T. Westbury developed many internal combustion engines and W. J. Hughes developed many models of agricultural and traction engines. We know C. E. Bowden was one of the most successful experimenters with aircraft, boats and radio-controlled models, which brought many inventions. He is particularly remembered for his successful power model flights in collaboration with ET Westbury, who created the Atom Minor engine powering several of his early models. In addition to these, we remember: Martin Evans developed many more models of locomotives, George H. Thomas specialized in the design of workshop accessories, Tubal Kane designed several stationary engine designs, and Claude B. Reeve designed many models of watches. Ian Bradley and Norman Hallows both wrote on a wide range of ideas, especially on finely crafted and original instruments.
